Organic Garden Tour – Mon to Fri at 10am
The ever-expanding Shangri-La certified organic garden and orchard is home to over 300 varieties of fruits, vegetables, culinary herbs, and medicinal plants and is designed to meet the needs of our farm to table program, as well as to serve as an educational platform to demonstrate the myriad of common fruits and vegetables along with unique subtropical foods that people can grow in SW Florida. Striving to grow the highest quality, nutrient dense fruits and vegetables, the garden promotes biological diversity within the plant and animal kingdoms. Participants in the garden tour will be led by knowledgeable, experienced gardeners and farmers who will guide them through this working farm to explore and explain different techniques utilized within our orchards, annual beds, permaculture areas, worm farm, and microgreen/seedling house. Join us for this exciting learning and sensory experience. Afterward, plan to stay for lunch to see and taste the creative ways our chefs are preparing the garden bounty.
History & Botanical Tour – Mon to Fri at 11am & 2pm
A tour of Shangri-La begins with a brief 7-minute video of the history of the property. Walking in the steps of the past on approximately 6 of the 8.5 acres of property guests enjoy more in depth historical insight. Over 40 species of trees are noted with markers throughout the grounds which include some very rare and seldom seen trees. Oak Creek flows on one side of the property next to the source of the spring which Bonita Springs is named after. This spring on the grounds of Shangri-La is a naturally occurring outpour of mineral water which is said to date back to the Calusa Indians as a sacred place. The tour includes several of the buildings on the property with information of their prior and present use. We will visit areas that are ideal for their beauty and tranquility. The tour ends with a pictorial history which is on display in the Great House and includes photographs and memorabilia from the prior owners.
